    Master cylinders & boosters

    Brake master cylinders, brake boosters and vacuum pumps: brake boosters for the VW Golf, Transporter T4 and Passat, Audi TT and A3, Skoda Octavia and Mercedes Vito, among others, electric vacuum pumps (including 12V units and Volvo XC90) and remote booster kits for classics such as MG, Mini and Land Rover.

    Heavy brake pedal? Test the vacuum first

    A hard pedal with mediocre braking performance usually points to the servo assistance, not the brakes themselves. Simple test: with the engine off, pump the pedal a few times to exhaust the vacuum, hold it down and start the engine — if the pedal sinks slightly, the booster is working; if nothing happens, the booster, vacuum pump or vacuum hose is faulty. A hissing sound under the dashboard when braking gives away a leaking diaphragm. On diesels and direct-injection engines a separate vacuum pump supplies the vacuum; check it for oil leaks. Bleed the system completely after replacing a brake master cylinder.
